A Candle For Shabandar Cafe
Emad Ali | Iraq | 2007 | 25 mins | PG

Founded in 1917, the Shabandar Cafe in Al Mutanabbi Street in the heart of the old centre of Baghdad, was a cultural landmark, where generations of Iraqis came to discuss and debate literature and politics - a living repository of Iraqi intellectual history and one of the last places where people could gather to exchange ideas.
Emad had shot most of his film by the end of 2006, but in March 2007, a massive car bomb destroyed the Shabandar Cafe, all the bookshops on Al Mutanabbi Street and killed and wounded scores of people. Days later, Baghdad's poets and artists held a wake in the ruins of the street they loved so much and Emad took a small camera and went back to film. As he was leaving he was attacked, his camera stolen and he was shot in the legs and chest, and his own story is an epilogue to his film about the Shabandar Cafe and Mutanabbi Street - before and after they were destroyed.

Along the Way
Haobam Paban Kumar | India | 2006 | 19 mins | PG

Manileima is an independent 35-year old woman, the second wife of a contractor, who lives separately from her alcoholic husband with her mother and son. One day, her son, Bungo, has an accident and is hospitalized. While many people offer her their assistance in the hospital, an unnamed stranger offers the most help. At the same time, this stranger develops a close relationship with her nephew, Geet. While Manileima never meets this stranger while her son is in hospital, she develops an attraction for him through Geet’s stories about his care and affection for Bungo.

Finally, Bungo recovers sufficiently to be discharged – and at this point Manileima has to decide what to do about the kind-hearted stranger. Set in Manipur, a North Eastern state of India where decades of insurgency have thrown the society into disarray, this film depicts how unrest has caused many people to cloister off their self-expression and how Manileima, a simple woman, finds a new meaning in her life.

Beyond the Call
Adrian Belic | USA | 2006 | 82 mins | PG

“We do what we can, when we can, because we can.”

In this Indiana-Jones-meets-Mother-Teresa adventure, it is with the above philosophy that three middle-aged men, former soldiers and modern-day knights travel the world delivering life-saving humanitarian aid directly into the hands of civilians and doctors. Ed Artis, James Laws and Walt Ratterman inspire through their deeds, not words, in some of the most dangerous yet beautiful places on Earth. Knightsbridge International is a unique humanitarian organization which they started, whose motto is "High Adventure and Service to Humanity." These unlikely heroes go to places where death from landmines, bullets, or bombs is as frequent as death from hunger, disease, or the elements. The camera follows these three men to where their personal convictions and courage drive them, on a journey into the heart of humanity.

This hilarious but heart-wrenching film by the directors of Academy-Award-nominated film Genghis Blues, has garnered the attention and touched the hearts of audiences and juries around the world, having picked up a number of awards from prestigious film festivals across the US.

David the Tolhildan
Mano Khalil | Kurdistan / Switzerland | 2007 | 54 mins | TBA

Five years ago, David Rouiller ran away from his life in Switzerland; giving up the amenities of his western lifestyle to commit his life to joining the Kurdish freedom movement PKK. If this is not cause for surprise in itself, we learn that this man is the son of a former President of the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.

Director Mano Khalil follows this man’s journey in his documentary as adjusts to his new surroundings and questions the motives for his actions. Is he escaping or confronting his fears and insecurities? Is he an adventurer, a dreamer, an idealist or a hero? Is his commitment visionary or illusory?

David the Tohildan provides an insightful and contemporary observation of the Kurdish freedom movement and the country’s political situation. Most importantly, the documentary also serves as a mirror for the audience to reflect our own outlook on oppression, respect, human dignity, freedom and violence.

Make A Wish
Cherien Dabis | Palestine | 2006 | 12 mins | PG

Make A Wish is an intimate personal journey that follows a young Palestinian girl, Mariam, on the day of her late father’s birthday. She begs her mother for extra money to buy a birthday cake for her late father. But when Mariam arrives at the bakery, she realizes that she still doesn't have enough. Determined to get the cake, she sets out to brave the obstacles and land some cash. What begins as a simple trip to the bakery turns into a journey that depicts not only the subtle tensions of a politically-charged environment, but also illustrates the grief that can result from growing up under occupation.

This film is illustrative of the many Palestinian men who are absent from their families due to imprisonment or death. This absence and grief is portrayed through the eyes of a child to capture the collision between child-like innocence and the reality of war. While the film does not shy away from the harshness of the Palestinian experience, this bittersweet film has many moments of candid humour which shine through Mariam’s journey.

Operation Filmmaker
Nina Davenport | USA | 2007 | 95 mins | M18

In this documentary, Nina Davenport challenges the romanticism of charity, as she follows a young Iraqi filmmaker, after he is invited to work with a Hollywood film director. What began with the intention of capturing an inspiring story of the dreams of a disadvantaged youth coming to life, soon turns into a tale of disillusionment and cultural divisiveness.

Soon after the fall of Baghdad in 2003, a young and charismatic film student, Muthana, stands in the rubble of the city's film school and explains to an American television audience that his dream of becoming a filmmaker has been destroyed - first by Saddam Hussein, then by American bombs. This brief, fortuitous appearance on MTV changes Muthana's life forever. Watching in the United States, actor/director Liev Schreiber decides to extend to the unknown Iraqi the opportunity of a lifetime - to come to Prague to work on an American movie, Everything is Illuminated. On set, frustrated expectations complicate the relationship between Muthana and his American benefactors in what becomes a cross-cultural endeavor gone awry. Filmmaker Nina Davenport becomes increasingly entangled in the young Iraqi's life as his visa is about to expire and the threat of returning to Baghdad looms. Operation Filmmaker, which is revealing on several levels, addresses the power dynamics between the American filmmaker and her Iraqi subject, unfolding as an engaging parable about the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Since its recent release, the film has already picked up a Special Jury Prize from the Chicago International Film Festival and the KNF Award from the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Steal this film Part 1 + 2
League of Noble Peers, J.J. King | Germany and UK | 2007 | 76 mins | NC16

Steal This Film is a two-part series that documents the movement against the monopoly and control of copyright and intellectual property. It speaks of the inherent need that culture must be shared.

Part One (32 mins), shot in Sweden and released in August 2006 only via BitTorrent peer-to-peer websites, combines accounts from prominent players in the Swedish piracy culture such as The Pirate Bay, an internet site that proclaims itself as the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker, interviews with Hollywood players, anti-piracy agencies, Swedish politicians as well as street interviews. It argues that using Bittorrent file-sharing websites to download music, books and films is a fundamental technical revolution in the distribution of media, and also a cultural and social revolution in the way people access media.

Part Two (44 mins), produced during 2007, was officially released on file sharing networks in December 2007 and was downloaded 150,000 times in the first three days of distribution. It covers the technological and enforcement end of the copyright wars. It explores the war on copying and downloading, arguing that this war will ultimately evolve into a war on the common internet user.

According to the filmmakers, “the battles between old and new modes of distribution, between the pirate and the institution of copyright, seem to be already lost and won. We know who the victors are. Why then say any more? Because waves of repression continue to come: lawsuits are still levied against innocent people; arrests are still made on flimsy pretexts, in order to terrify and confuse; harsh laws are still enacted against file-sharing, taking their place in the gradual erosion of our privacy and the bolstering of the surveillance state.”

Steal this film 1 and 2 offers a new perspective on intellectual property and the future of distribution, production and creativity. In our current times where social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace and the ubiquitous Youtube are an essential part of our daily lives, this film is especially relevant. As Mark Getty, son of oil billionaire, Paul Getty once said: "Intellectual Property is the oil of the 21st century”.

The Third Generation
Rainer Werner Fassbinder | Germany | 1979 | 105 mins | M18

If we ever needed a comedy about terrorism, it was made already by Fassbinder in 1979. The Third Generation is a black comedy about a bumbling gang of radicals who kidnap a powerful industrialist, unaware of hidden agendas. The large cast features the best of Fassbinder stars including Hanna Schygulla and Udo Kier. Fassbinder premiered the movie at Cannes, one month before the real RAF (Red Army Faction) tried to assassinate NATO head, Alexander Haig. At a later showing at a German film festival, outraged audience members stormed the projection booth and stopped the film.

VHS Kahloucha
Nejib Belkadhi | Tunisia | 2006 | 80 mins | PG

Tunisia is not a country renowned for its film industry. However, this has not stopped flamboyant, charismatic house painter, Moncef Kahloucha, from making no-budget adventure films in his spare time. He buys his props in the local market, and enlists friends or neighbours as actors, paying them, when he does, in alcohol. With his great love for cinema, 1970s genre cinema in particular, Kahloucha has made a battery of homage pieces on his VHS Panasonic 3500 and claims such hits as I Had No Money and Now I'm Loaded and Misery to Get Rid of the Booze. This film captures him producing his latest feature, Tarzan of the Arabs.

Director Belkadhi’s endearing portrayal of this impassioned filmmaker captures the light that Kahloucha brings into the mundane lives of his cast and crew, while revealing Kahloucha’s secret love for his favourite lead actress, a sultry senior citizen. A fun and inspirational film for anyone interested in filmmaking.

When Timawa Meets Delgado
Ray Gibraltar | Phillippines | 2007 | 80 mins | M18

Mixing genres and modes with reckless abandon, When Timawa Meets Delgado provides a rollicking good time. The two title characters are a gay literature teacher and a Palanca award-winning writer and a videographer who dabbles in theatre respectively, and both men find their way to the final interview as Nursing programme applicants. As the title suggests, Timawa meets Delgado on the way out from the interview, and we are treated to a sequence of flashbacks, or perhaps possibilities about these two characters' pasts. All this with the grit and grime of Iloilo city as the dramatic backdrop, for the central problem the film addresses is poverty: the poverty that drives such men to a career they have neither interest nor inclination in.

In a genre-bending move, Gibraltar mixes in documentary-style interviews with actual nursing applicants as well as poetic sequences and story-within-a-story interludes, exploring the provocative topic of male nurses, and the attendant cultural assumptions about gender, sexuality, nationality, activism, and ultimately, reality. Defying both filmmaking and cultural convention, this salad of genres provides us with a unique insight into a career which many men find themselves forced into, and in turn, the culture that produces such men.
